Ten questions to ask before choosing a care provider

Comparing providers is easier with the right questions. Here are the ones we'd ask in your position.

About the carers

  • How are carers checked - references, identity and DBS?
  • What experience will they have with conditions like dementia?
  • Do we get to talk to the carer before they arrive?
  • What happens if the match doesn't work?

About the arrangement

Providers work in two ways: some put carers on their payroll, others - us included - act as introductory agencies. Both are legitimate; what matters is understanding which model you're signing up to and where responsibilities sit.

  • Who covers the carer's breaks and holidays?
  • Who do we call if something goes wrong at night or at the weekend?
  • How often will the care plan be reviewed?

About money

  • What's the weekly price and what's included?
  • Do Christmas, bank holidays or a second person change the price?
  • How much notice is needed to change or stop care?
